THINKING ABOUT KAYAKING ... or BRING YOUR OWN BOAT
So! You're thinking about kayaking, or you've just bought a kayak. Did you see those Olympic kayakers? Canada has some of the best kayak paddlers in the world. It's befitting, because this country has a fine tradition of paddling.

Maybe you've seen the kayaks in the stores; or on the water somewhere. The colours, sizes, weights, and different types for different purposes can bewilder even an old pro. How do you decide what to buy?

We've seen a lot of kayaks in our 40 years of kayaking, and we've seen a lot of mistakes. We've made a lot of mistakes. We've learned from others. We've put a lot of miles under the hull, and every inch of travel was an experience. I mean, who do you know who has been caught in a kayak, all alone, in a tornado-like wind on Georgian Bay? Who do you know that did that same thing again?

SAFETY
My lessons are your ticket to safety. They're not a guarantee. Better to learn from my years than to experience similar mistakes on your own time. In fact, if you check out this website, you'll find a link to one of my paddling trips that taught me a lot. Skills and knowledge, and paddling with a group saved the day. Get the skills here, before you need them.

HISTORY
You'll also find a bit of my family history, some of the whitewater kayak clubs I belonged to and some of my leadership roles. My certifications are listed here as well.

EXPERIENCE
But mainly, I want you to look at the idea that I've got a fair history of paddling canoes solo, on trips into the wilderness, and a lot of kayak tripping with gear, long before the nice sea kayaks were starting to come to the public.

CERTIFIED
I did a lot of years of whitewater kayaking. I started racing early, but racing's not in my blood, travelling is. Nonetheless, I got certified as a whitewater kayak instructor on some of the biggest whitewater in North America. I'm certified to teach sea kayaking. But those are tales for a campfire, or while we're paddling together.

PAYING IT FORWARD
That history goes with me every time I take someone out to show them how to use the equipment that make up the sport of kayaking. And I pass it on quite well, thank you. You can check my record with the comments made by just some of the folks who've been here, and by the head of one of the largest sea kayak schools in Canada.
